Tummy Tuck
A sagging belly after childbirth, excess skin after significant weight loss, or body changes that neither exercise nor diet can fix — these are situations where abdominoplasty delivers results that are simply not achievable any other way. Abdominoplasty, as the procedure is medically known, is one of the most sought-after operations in plastic surgery. Yet many questions and misconceptions persist around it.
What is abdominoplasty and who is it for?
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat in the abdominal area are removed. The operation typically also involves tightening weakened abdominal muscles. The result is a flatter, firmer, and more proportionate abdomen.
The procedure is suitable for people who:
- Have excess or sagging skin following significant weight loss
- Are dealing with a soft, weakened belly after one or more pregnancies
- Suffer from diastasis recti — a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles
- Experience skin fold problems causing irritation or hygiene issues
Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss method. It is body contouring for people who are already at or near a stable weight.
Types of tummy tuck: How to choose the right one
Not all tummy tucks are the same. The extent of the procedure is tailored to each patient's individual situation.
Full abdominoplasty
The most extensive option. The surgeon removes excess skin across the entire area from one hip to the other, just above the pubic bone. The abdominal wall is tightened and the navel is repositioned (if necessary). The scar runs along the bikini line and is largely concealed by underwear.
Mini abdominoplasty
A smaller procedure suitable for patients with excess skin only in the lower abdomen. The scar is shorter and the operation less extensive. Muscle tightening is limited or not part of the procedure.
Abdominoplasty with liposuction
When excess fat is present in addition to excess skin, abdominoplasty is combined with liposuction. The result is more defined and symmetrical. This combination is assessed individually by the surgeon with regard to tissue blood supply and safe healing.
How does the operation proceed?
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia. The operation typically takes two to four hours, depending on its extent.
Our surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdomen, along the bikini line. The skin is freed from the underlying tissue, the excess portion is removed, and the abdominal fascia is tightened with absorbable sutures. The navel is repositioned to its new natural position.
After the operation, the patient remains hospitalised at the clinic for 1–2 nights for safe monitoring.
The scar after a tummy tuck
The scar is a permanent part of the result. This should not come as a surprise, but as a conscious decision before the operation.
The scar from a full abdominoplasty runs horizontally across the lower abdomen, typically at or just above the hairline. It is deliberately placed so that it is as well hidden as possible under underwear or a swimsuit. The length of the scar depends on the extent of the procedure.
Immediately after the operation, the scar is red and prominent. Over the course of the first year it gradually fades, flattens and becomes less noticeable. In most patients the scar reaches its final appearance within twelve to eighteen months.
Proper scar care significantly affects the outcome. Scar massage and protection from UV radiation are standard recommendations in post-operative care.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tummy tuck suitable after a caesarean section?
Yes. The caesarean scar can be incorporated into the surgical plan and in some cases the surgeon corrects or integrates it into the final scar. The operation should be planned after breastfeeding has ended and ideally at least twelve months after delivery.
Can I still get pregnant after abdominoplasty?
Technically yes. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is possible. However, it is advisable to plan the procedure only after reproductive plans are complete. Pregnancy will stretch the tightened muscle wall again and diminish the surgical result.
How long do tummy tuck results last?
With a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle, the results are long-lasting. Significant weight fluctuations or pregnancy after the operation can negatively affect the outcome.
Is general anaesthesia necessary, or can the operation be done under local?
Full abdominoplasty requires general anaesthesia. Mini abdominoplasty can in some cases be performed under sedation or local anaesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of the procedure and the surgeon's assessment.
When will I see the final result?
Significant swelling subsides within the first four to six weeks. The final result is visible approximately 2–6 months after the operation.
What determines the outcome
A tummy tuck is an operation with real results. It can change the shape of the body in a way that is simply not otherwise available. At the same time it requires thorough preparation, realistic expectations and respect for the healing period.
The decision to undergo such a procedure is always personal. And a good decision is built on accurate information and trust in the doctor who will guide you through the entire process.
